英國人早熟，很多16、17歲的青少年在完成GCSE後，便決定放棄繼續升學踏出社會工作。而事實英國在法律上給予青少年不少自主權，究竟這個年齡可以自由選擇做些什麼？
工作 Working
英國免費教育至GCSE程度，即是16歲。當完成整個免費教育離開學校，便可以合法地出外工作。工作的時長不限，可自由決定任兼職或全職的工作（最多40小時）。賺取每小時至少 £4.62（21/22年最低工資）
National Insurance number （N.I 號碼）
大家都知道，在英國必須有N.I 號碼才可以開始工作。在英國每位曾向政府領取Child Benefit的兒童，都賦予一個篇號，這就是N.I 號碼。一般而言，年青人會在滿16歲前的3個月左右收到信件，信件內附有你的姓名資料、N.I 號碼和一張N.I 咭。
假如你是剛移民到英國或者不曾領取Child Benefit，而又合乎工作年齡的年青人，想開始工作可以自行申請N.I 號碼。現時申請方法有兩種：

- 電話申請：0800 141 2079
離開學校便可以出外工作，究竟是什麼時候？哪一天？每個法治地區都有不同的定義：
英格蘭 England
暑假完結前（9月30日）滿16歲，則最快可以在6月最後一個星期五離開學校，並開始工作。
英格蘭與其他地方有點出入。未滿18歲的年青人，想出外工作必須同時乎合以下其中一項條件：
- 留在全日制教育，例如：大學、專科文憑等
- 全職工作必須是學徒或實習
- 工作兼職或做義工20小時以上，必須同時入讀非全日制教育或培訓
蘇格蘭 Scotland
在3月1日至9月30日前滿16歲，最快可以在5月31日後離開學校。
在10月1日至2月28日才滿16歲，則需要在聖誕節假期前才可離開學校，開始合法地工作。
威爾斯 Wales
暑假完結前（9月30日）滿16歲，則最快可以在6月最後一個星期五離開學校，並開始工作。
北愛爾蘭 Northern Ireland
學期開始至暑假前（9月1日 至 7月1日期間）滿16歲，可以在6月30日後離開學校，開始合法地工作。
7月2日至8月31日內才滿16歲，則需要等待到下個6月30日才可以離開學校。
獨立生活 Living
經濟能力低的16、17歲年青人，在法律上未有賦予權利給他們脫離父母獨自生活，（因為未滿18歲的人士所簽署的合約是無法律效力，因此無法自行租房）。不過在人道主義社會的世界裡，並非所有事都必然。
假如家中有嚴重問題或處於危險，讓你無法繼續與家人生活，加上出現以下情況，便可向政府提出申請要求提供公屋，獨自生活：
- 與有暴力傾向的人同住
- 沒錢吃飯
- 沒有地方住
- 居住環境正影響你的健康或教育
- 房屋不適合居住（例如曾發生火災或水浸）
財政獨立 Financial
既然可以出外工作，當然可以開銀行戶口，英國有不少銀行專門推出yound people 的個人戶口，針對吸引16-19歲的年青人，但非所有銀行接受沒有父母/監護人在場的情況下開戶口。
這樣又如何做到財政獨立？
雖然大部分銀行都必須有父母/監護人在場或住址證明，但你的個人戶口的資金在法律上只屬於你本人。所以父母/監護人在沒有經你的同意的情況下，他們是無法亦不可能提取到銀行內的資金。
父母/監護人無法在場開戶口，怎麼辦？
假使父母不在或他們不同意，你仍有機會可以開設自己的個人戶口。英國還有少數銀行接受在沒有父母/監護人的情況下開戶口：
- Bank of Scotland
- 16-17歲的年青人可獨自開設個人戶口
- 所須文件：出世紙/護照，住址證明（學校信）
- Halifax
- 16-17歲的年青人可獨自開設個人戶口
- 所須文件：出世紙/護照，住址證明（學校信）
結婚 Marriage
16歲以上的英國居民，在法律上是可以註冊結婚。不過，在英格蘭和威爾斯的18歲以下的居民，必須獲得父母/監護人的同意，才可以註冊結婚。
