英國家長為了令小朋友將來有更愉快的學習生活，從小就帶小孩到各Playgroup。學前班分為兩種：Playgroup和Pre-school，但大部人都稱呼學前班為’Playgroup’。
這兩種Playgroup分別對小孩的發展有相對的幫助，所以由小孩6-7個月大就開始帶他們去。讓我在這裡為你們簡單介紹一下：
Playgroup嬰兒及幼兒班：Playgroup需要家長陪同，0歲至5歲的小朋友都可以去的，主要幫助小孩接觸人群和新事物。同時透過玩玩具和活動時學懂與其他小朋友分享。家長們也可以在聚會裡認識同區內的其他家長，交流心得。
由於Playgroup是私人舉辦的，所有Playgroup都需要付費用，Playgroup的價格視乎城市而訂，因為不同城市場地租金不一，所以有些Playgroup價格會較高。在Newcastle，Playgroup的價格大概£1-£1.5/2小時活動。

Pre-school幼兒至學前班：Pre-school是給2至3歲的小朋友，學懂人類最基本的群體生活，同時習慣沒有家長在身邊給倚賴。一班學前班可容納8-10個小孩，在法例管制下，每個看護員只可帶2、3個2-3歲小孩。 由於看護員時薪高，報名費用也雙對地昂貴。在Newcastle，價格大概£8-£12/一節課，3小時一節。每天最多兩節課，分別為上午9時至中午12時，或中午12時至下午3時。 如果同時上兩節課，家長需要為小孩預備午餐。 看護除了照顧小孩的需要外，還會教導小孩上廁所、畫畫、唱歌、講故事和其他小朋友相處⋯⋯等等。
