英國大學學費昂貴，很多本地學生都向政府借貸讀大學。當學生畢業後，便開始還款生涯。
政府設定學生借貸的還款門檻，讓起薪點較低的畢業生可以暫緩還款。還款門檻是因應每年的通賬和最低工資標準來調升。在英國的通賬率創高峰之下，政府竟宣佈有意將還款門檻調低！
英國太多沒用的劣質大學課程
原來政府注意到，2021年多達4800名GCSE的學生在沒有獲得英語和數學合格的情況下，竟然可以升上高級程度的課程，認為這種狀況或會令很多沒有基本資格的學生升上大學，繼而鼓吹升學至劣質大學課程。
相信這計劃可有效地淘汰一些對畢業生沒用而卻昂貴的劣質大學課程。
現時的還款門檻
學生們畢業後，償還貸款是什麼時候開始，就視乎他們的年薪。21/22年度的學生貸款的還款門檻是年薪£27,295，年收入高過此數，便將要在下一個財政年度（4月份）開始償還。政府為了減輕年青人初就業的生活經濟負擔，一般都根據英國的平均生活水平來設定還款門檻，讓起薪點較低的畢業生可以暫緩還款。
政府宣佈的計劃內容
計劃調低至£25000
2023年9月入讀大學課程的借款學生，畢業後年收入超過£25000，便要開始還款。
借貸利息
新的借貸學生，無需支付任何利息。但借貸的款項會根據通賬而每年遞增，能有效鼓勵學生儘早還清貸款。
成績差沒資格借貸
沒有達到 GCSE 數學和英語 4 級 或 A-level 兩個 E 級的學生，可能會被禁止獲得貸款。這項計劃可淘汰劣質的大學課程。
還款期限加長至40年
英國的學生貸款的還款年期拖延過長，而又未能還清，可被視為『無能力償還』而被取消，無須償還。現時的還款超過30年還未還清，剩餘的尾數則可無須償還。
而今次宣佈的計劃裡面，還提到將還款期限加長至40年。即是，21歲畢業後一直是低收入的人士，將要一直欠債至61歲，才可撇清貸款。
