官方數據顯示，英國經濟正面臨工人嚴重短缺的問題，職位空缺創歷史新高。主要原因是疫情嚴重令城市被封鎖，導致很多行業被迫暫停營業、裁員，甚至倒閉。還有Covid-19中染病、死亡的人口（超過十萬人）和脫歐令歐洲人無法再以歐盟身份入境英國工作等問題，形成今時今日的局面。
由招聘和就業聯合會 (REC) 發表報告得知，在8月底共有 166 萬個職位空缺，估計這數字在未來幾個月會繼續上升。這些行業包括：超市、快餐店和酒吧連鎖店，企業期望政府機關能輸入外地（包括歐盟）的工人填補英國相關工作崗位的空缺。
