你不再需要去挪威或冰島，因為在英格蘭的諾森伯蘭郡（Northumberland) 的上空能看到更清晰更乾淨的北極光。每年踏入冬天的月份大概11月至明年3月，是看北極光的最佳時機（視乎天氣和溫度）。
哪個地點位置是最好？
北極光是帶電的高能粒子和高層大氣（熱層）中的原子碰撞而造成的發光現象。是極需要在非常黑暗和晴朗的天空中才會出現的。而Northumberland 是唯一被官方確認為全英最黑暗的天空，非常適合觀賞北極光的地段。
這郡是個非常綠化的地段（英國的國家野生公園Northumberland National Park 就在此），優越的環境締造最清澈和黑暗的天空。在公園附近的Seahouses城鎮內，Seahouses Harbour口岸 或Lowgos Bay海灣的上空，被認為是觀賞的最佳位置。這城鎮的食、住都很方便，觀看極光之餘可順帶去附近著名景點：Anlwick Castle等。
除了Northumberland外，英國的蘇格蘭最北面的城鎮或高源地帶也能觀賞到北極光，例如：Moray或Cairngorms。

觀賞北極光要注意的事項
- 遠離光害 – 要看到極光是需要晴朗而黑暗的天空，因此要遠離燈火通明的城鎮。最好在高峰時段大約晚上9點和凌晨1點的“黑暗位置”觀賞。
- 多穿衣服，可帶上毛毯坐著慢慢欣賞。
