National Insurance (N.I.) 是英國入息課稅的重要一環，一個號碼記錄著國民一生對國家的貢獻的多少，以量度國民獲得某些福利和國家養老金的多少。同時記錄著在英國逗留期間所需的稅費和其他數據。 所以任何人什至歐盟公民，只要在英國開始工作都需要N.I.。 申請後，部門會發出臨時使用的號碼，大概幾週會收到正式文件。
什麼人需要N.I.?
如果你是16歲或以上，而同時乎合以下條件，您便需要繳納國民保險：
- 受聘的員工，而每週收入超過£162英鎊
- 自僱人士，每年盈利£6,205英鎊或以上
如何獲得N.I. 號碼？
現時只得一種方法申請，你需要通過電話申請國民保險號碼。

沒有國民保險號碼能不能工作？
如果你能證明你可以在英國工作，你可以在你的國民保險號碼還未正式批出前開始工作。 你只需要告訴你的雇主你正在申請中，當收到正式號碼後將其交給雇主便可以了。
申請國民保險號碼需要任何文件嗎？
Jobcentre Plus可能會寫信給您要求約見面，到時候你可能被問及你現時的情況和你需要國民保險號碼的原因。信中可能提及需要提供證明你身份的官方文件，例如：
- 護照/身份證
- 居留簽證
- 出生證明
- 駕駛執照
- 婚姻證書
開始正式工作後，要付了多少錢給N.I.?
如你是一名受聘員工，只要你每週收入超過£162-£892英鎊，則需要支付國民保險費。 你需要支付免稅額（£161）後的12％，£892英鎊之後的收入是2％。
假設，你每週收入為£250:
£250-£161=£89 ，然後 £88 X 12%=£10.68
那麼你每週的N.I.需繳的費用是 £10.68
如果您每週的收入在£116英鎊到£162英鎊之間，你的貢獻亦將被視為並記錄已支付國家保險。
福利
在開始時的簡介內，筆者曾經提及過你所繳交的國民保險與國家福利是有著唇齒相依的關係。就讓我在這裡輕輕的說一下。
福利拿多拿少，是由索償人的繳納國民保險記錄和情況決定。當中的福利包括：每週收入支助、死亡、退休、失業、產假和殘疾等，這些一次性福利。
還有：
- 就業和支援津貼
- 喪失工作能力津貼
- 傷殘津貼
- 求職者津貼。基於國民保險繳納記錄的求職者津貼（JSA(C)) ，需要乎合索償福利年度前兩個完整納稅年度的Class 1 國民保險繳款。
- 疾病福利
- 國家與收入相關的養老金計劃。在1978年至2002年期間繳納全部1級國民保險費的員工獲得了SERPS養老金。
- 英國基本國家養老金。基本國家養老金基於個人的國民保險記錄。支付國民保險的年度稱為合格年份。
- 失業支助
- 喪偶母親的津貼
- 喪偶父母的津貼
- 寡婦養老金
如何查看你的國民保險記錄？
隨著網絡發達，現在只需要到政府網頁註冊一個Government Gateway戶口。除了查看國民保險記錄外，還可查看你的繳稅、申請福利或津貼的狀況。
