現時英國的中、小學校對校服有指定款式要求，須向指定的供應商購買，所以一般價格偏向昂貴；冬季和夏季各有一套款式，加上小孩長大得很快，家長們每年都需要花好幾百鎊只為購買校服。這個問題一直流傳以久，經常被傳媒報導，現在教育局終於有所行動。
英國教育局向英國公立學校發出最新指引，學校必須調整現時的校服規定，減少使用指定品牌的服裝，讓家長們自由選擇繼續向供應商、High-street服飾店 或 超級市場購買，以價格來決定，可減輕一般家庭購買校服的負擔。
教育局長Nadhim Zahawi指，校服只為了讓小孩和年青人提供了一種認同感和社區感，不應為家庭造成負擔。今次的指引，相信能為平均每個家庭節省£50以上，甚至或更多。
回收二手校服供學生選購
同時指引內提及到，每年送往堆填區的校服多達35萬噸，所以將要求學校進行回收二手校服，以低價供學生選購。這不但可以讓家庭減少開支，亦能為地球減少垃圾和減低碳排放量。
其實現時已有很多學校回收二手校服，並在學校地方內以低價出售甚至免費領取，但大多數為小學，期望指引推出後，中學生也能受惠。
