英國政府正在調整一套新的公路法，這個新的規定是允許使用自動駕駛系統的司機手離軚盤休息，還可以眼睛離開路面，在內置的屏幕上觀看電視和電影。預計這公路法在今年暑假起被正式更改。
可以休息、看電視電影，那麼使用智能手機、平板電腦都可以嗎？答案是：不可以的，這仍屬違法！因為當汽車要求駕駛者再次操控軚盤時，手持智能電子產品會造成障礙。
自動駕駛系統的汽車
英國運輸局（DfT）表示，目前英國道路上暫不允許使用自動駕駛系統，但相信隨著新的公路法被啟用，到時候自動駕駛系統的車輛亦被投入使用。不過去年4月起政府已正式立例，允許使用Autopilot這類型的駕駛輔助系統時，雙手無須放在軚盤上，但必須以慢速（最多37mph）在同一條行車線上行駛。
能減少交通事故
現時有超過88%的交通事故是人為造成，政府認為自動駕駛系統能有效地減少交通事故，提高道路安全。在這種情況下，駕駛者將不用對撞車事故負責，而保險公司將不會要求索賠。
汽車的『輔助』系統
但需要注意，cruise control 巡航控制 和 automatic stop/start 自動剎車/開啟 的功能並不包括在內，因為這些被歸類為只屬於『輔助』性質，所以仍需駕駛者控制和操作。例如：Tesla’s Autopilot Level 2 driver-assist system，汽車指引內有提及到 『should not reduce their concentration levels while driving 不應減少駕駛時的專注力』，即是需時刻注視前方的道路情況。
Tesla 的 Autopilot 並非全自動駕駛功能⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️，因此未能享受法例給予的特權。
