暑期工本身是一個很好的人生課程，能夠讓孩子對生活、勞動，以及個人價值觀有進一步的了解。 通過工作的經歷，在挫折中可以進一步培養和提升自己的自尊和自立能力。 此外，在工作中可以結識到很多來自不同背景的人，擴大社交圈子。
工作的最低年齡
在英國，孩子滿13歲起可以開始出外兼職工作（Part-time job），但從事參與戲劇、電視 或模特 等除外，想從事這範疇的工作必須擁有 performance licence（表演許可證）。
全職工作（Full-time job）- 則需要至少等待完成GCSE課程並年滿16歲，才可以正式全職上班，但每週工時不能超過40小時。另外，在英格蘭未滿18歲的青年，在工作的同時還須繼續接受 非全日制的教育 或 學徒培訓。
兒童在工作上的限制
英國政府對兒童出外工作有著非常嚴謹的規定，他們對兒童的工作地點和時間上設立不少規定和限制。
兒童在以下條件情況下不能工作：
- 工廠或工業場所等地方
- 上課時間
- 早上 7 點之前或晚上 7 點之後
- 上學前，超過一小時的工作時間（除非市政府特別允許）
- 超過 4 小時的工作時間，而沒有休息至少 1 小時
- 任何可能對其健康、正常生活或學習有影響的工作
- 全年的學校假期中，獲少於 2 週的休息時間
學期進行期間
16歲以下的學童在學期進行期間，每週的工作時間不能超過12小時，還有以下限制：
- 週一至週五的上學日 和 週日，每天最多工作 2 小時
- 至於週六，13 至 14 歲的學童最多工作 5 小時，15 至 16 歲的最多工作 8 小時
學校放假期間
- 13-14歲的學童
- 每週最多工時25小時
- 週一至週五和週六，每天最多工作5小時
- 週日最多工作2小時
- 15至16歲的學童
- 每週最多工時35小時
- 週一至週五和週六，每天最多工作8小時
- 週日最多工作2小時
市政府對當地設定的規定和限制
部份的市政府對當地的學童有特別限制，並列出一系列兒童不能從事的工作，還可能對工作時間、地點和企業的類型有其他限制。這些都可以從市政府網頁找到答案。
